It’s estimated that 1 in 17 people globally are affected by a rare disease at some point in their lives, and more than 7000 different rare diseases have been identified.

These conditions often come with a myriad of physical, emotional, and social challenges, compounded by limited awareness and resources.

In this context, digital products have the potential to serve as lifelines, offering support, information, and connectivity.

But to truly make a difference, they must be designed with empathy at their core.

Applying understanding of lived experiences

A participant from a recent study exploring how individuals with Haemophilia B interact with digital tools emphasised the importance of having an easy-to-use symptom-tracking feature.

They stressed the necessity for simplicity, expressing that users lack the time and energy to spend extended periods regularly inputting data into an app.

This highlights the critical need for digital solutions that prioritise functionality and efficiency, acknowledging individuals managing complex medical conditions’ time constraints and energy levels.

Incorporating such user research findings into the design process ensures that digital products are not only empathetic, but also practical and user-friendly.

Simplifying tasks and streamlining interactions can enhance the usability of these products, ultimately supporting individuals with rare diseases in effectively managing their health.

Accessibility is crucial
