Wearables and their role in fighting C-19

A UK tech firm is harnessing lighting control technology to measure and control the COVID-19 virus via wearable devices.

Prolojik’s Proxima devices allow organisations from commercial workplaces to schools and universities to allow people to manage their own risk and exposure to the COVID virus  through wearable technology in the form of a wristband or lanyard  that connects wirelessly to Prolojik’s Proxima sensor network.

The movement and temperature of each wearer can be monitored throughout all areas within a space, vibrating when people come within two metres of each other. It also takes their temperature to alert them of potential illness.

Data collected via the Proxima sensor network can be stored on premises for real time analysis or shared with third party systems such as BMS.

If someone contracts COVID within an organisation, their interactions in the preceding days can be tracked. This can identify others that have been in close proximity to them and therefore exposed to the virus and potentially at risk.

This allows facility and building operators to focus on specific areas,rather than having to close down an entire building. This also allows for a more targeted approach to infection management, by isolating individuals or specific social bubbles.

The integration with the lighting control system means that all areas of the building are within the trackable zone, including workspaces, circulation areas, back-of-house, plantrooms, car parks, presentation spaces and external spaces.

Each wearable will provide key data on aspects of employee care and building management including:

  • targeted messaging;
  • people and asset tracking;
  • profile-based control;
  • lone worker monitoring;
  • building sanitisation;
  • physical distancing;
  • environmental monitoring;
  • indoor location – way finding;
  • revenue leakage

Prolojik managing director Asela Rodrigo said: “At a time when businesses and educational institutions need as much support as possible to be operational, Proxima wearables provide the ultimate reassurance and comfort for employee and students.

A Proxima wristband

Proxima’s PS180 Beacon Lanyard is a flexible lanyard sensor, RFID tag, capable of measuring movement for user tracking purposes. The sensor reports its status using BLE advertising telegrams and these BLE messages can be retrieved by a PS462 Proxima sensor and sent to a headend PC for space analytics.

Proxima’s PS181 Contact Trace Wristband is a discrete wristband sensor, which monitors body temperature and alerts users when closer than 2m from other wristbands, making it ideal for social distancing monitoring. Haptic alerts between two or more wristbands when users are within two metres of each other, as well as visual LED indication when other wristbands are too close and 20,000 contact alerts are stored and a history record can be reviewed via an app.

High Wycombe-based Prolojik also enables specifiers, installers and users of lighting controls to harness its network for other uses.

Prolojik combines open protocol technology with engineering to create products intended to offer benefits such as: smart, intuitive control solutions; maximising energy and cost savings; open protocol, future-proof, scalable solutions.

In 2015 Prolojik launched Power Over Ethernet (POE) controls to the UK market, in the form of LIGHTMATRIX system.

Prolojik’s Proxima and Go products utilising Bluetooth networking have also secured Lux and red Dot design awards.
