Efforts to commercialise a novel approach to spinal surgery for the European market and additional global regions are underway.

Toronto-based 7D Surgical has announced today that it has obtained CE Mark certification for its Machine-vision Image Guided Surgery (MvIGS) system.

The MvIGS system utilises a novel camera-based technology, coupled with machine-vision algorithms to eliminate some of the long-standing frustrations with previous surgical navigational platforms.

7D Surgical says the technology offers a more streamlined surgical workflow that has the potential to reduce surgical costs and provide a safer, radiation-free surgical environment.

Chief executive officer of 7D Surgical, Beau Standish said: “We are extremely excited to achieve our CE Mark.

“With successful launches already underway in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean, we are eager to begin expanding the MvIGS technology into the European spine market.

“We are very proud of our team for accomplishing this important milestone and we are continuing our growth and expansion into international markets.”

Building on previous technology, the MvIGS system uses visible light to allow spine surgeons to perform spinal registration in seconds and register each vertebral body independently.

As a result, system accuracy does not depend on the position of the patient’s spine or patient movement that may occur over the course of the procedure.

This is expected to save valuable operative time and eliminate intraoperative radiation exposure to the surgeon, staff, and patient.

Brian Stuart, chief revenue officer for 7D Surgical, said, “Accomplishing true segmental registration with this technology has had a tremendous impact on the safety and efficacy of the system, as it results in high navigational accuracy in mobile areas of the spine and complex anatomy.

“We are truly transforming what medical imaging and navigation is and what it can do to improve patient outcomes, while driving down healthcare costs. We are extremely excited to introduce our novel 7D MvIGS system to European customers later this year.”

7D Surgical is a privately-owned Toronto based company that develops advanced optical technologies and machine vision-based registration algorithms to improve surgical workflow and patient care.

7D Surgical’s FDA 510(k)-cleared and Health Canada-approved MvIGS system delivers improvement to surgical workflows in spine and cranial surgeries. 7D Surgical intends to apply the underlying technology to other surgical specialties.
