New GP chatbot integration offers early alcohol advice via Drinkaware partnership

X-on Health, one of the UK’s leading providers of digital front door solutions for primary care, has announced a new partnership with Drinkaware, the UK’s leading alcohol charity.
The collaboration will see signposting to Drinkaware’s evidence-based resources integrated directly into X-on Health’s AI Surgery Assist chatbot, used by GP surgeries across the whole of the UK.
Sharon Hanley is director of primary care at X-on Health.
She said: “Primary care is the front door to the NHS and working to support the wider community is so important, aligning directly to the neighbourhood health aspirations of the NHS 10 Year Plan.
“We’re proud to partner with Drinkaware in this initiative and plan to introduce further approaches to support local communities in the future.”
In 2023/24, there were an estimated 1,018,986 hospital admissions related to alcohol consumption in England alone.
Through the forward-thinking partnership, patients engaging with the chatbot who mention alcohol concerns, whether in the context of health, prescriptions, mental wellbeing or general enquiries, will automatically be signposted to Drinkaware’s trusted information and self-help tools.
These include access to the Drinking Check, advice on how to moderate your drinking, and links to mental health guidance.
The aim is to take a community first approach, empowering patients with accurate, non-judgmental advice at the very first point of contact, before they ever speak to a GP or nurse.
This new capability reflects the growing role of AI triage in relieving pressure on GP practices.
X-on Health’s digital tools already help surgeries reduce demand by routing patient contacts to appropriate self-care, pharmacy or community services.
With 15 per cent of all adults aged 18+ drinking more than 14 units a week guideline, alcohol, remains a persistent and under-acknowledged driver of patient need, from sleep disruption and anxiety to long-term physical harm.
By embedding Drinkaware signposting into early interactions, practices can offer meaningful guidance immediately, while preserving clinician time for more other appointments.
Karen Tyrell, CEO at the charity Drinkaware, said: “Supporting people to make informed choices about their drinking is our mission at Drinkaware.
“We are therefore delighted to be working with X-on Health and GP practices in this new initiative to signpost people to our tools and advice through the NHS digital front door.
“It is exactly the type of collaboration the NHS Ten Year plan envisages, using AI and digital tools to help GP surgeries reduce demand.”
