How to Properly Recover After a Major Operation

Major surgery is a significant undertaking that involves the repair or removal of organs or body parts. They carry a longer recovery period and a higher risk of complications, especially if mistakes are made. You may choose to make a no-win-no-fee claim for the medical negligence you’ve experienced to support your recovery financially.

If you have an upcoming major operation or have recently undergone one, keep reading for our tips on taking care of yourself.

Avoid Doing Too Much, Too Soon

Getting active and back into your normal routine too quickly can set back your recovery. You may inadvertently prevent your wound from healing properly, so follow your doctor’s instructions closely, whether it’s to rest for two weeks or avoid the gym for a month.

Even if your wound appears to be healing and returning to normal, you don’t know what’s happening internally and how overexerting yourself will affect it. Heavy lifting can be especially risky, so limit your activity to gentle movements.

Look After Your Stitches

If you have any stitches from your surgery, you need to keep them clean and dry and check for swelling, pain, or changes to your usual skin colour. For most surgeries, you can wash or shower 24 hours after the procedure. Clean the area with mild soap, then gently pat it dry with a clean towel.

Make sure you don’t go for a swim or soak in a bath until the stitches have dissolved or been removed, as moisture can hinder the healing process. Ask your doctor about your usual creams and moisturisers to check if they are safe to use on your wound.

Follow a Healthy Lifestyle

Lifestyle changes can help keep your body in top shape after surgery and increase the chance of a successful recovery. You should stop smoking, as it can leave you at greater risk of infection and can prolong your hospital stay.

Limit your alcohol intake to 14 units at most a week, and eat a home-cooked, balanced diet that provides all the minerals and vitamins your body needs to heal. Your mental health is just as important after surgery, so try de-stressing through deep breathing and mindfulness to help you relax or read your favourite book.

Make Small Movements

When you’re cleared to do so, make sure you get out of bed and move around, whether it’s gentle stretches or walks. Getting mobile is essential after an operation, as lying in bed can trigger serious problems like blood clots, atrophy, and pressure ulcers.

Resist the urge to sleep until it’s your usual bedtime by getting out of bed and moving around. It will give you energy and speed up digestion. Physical activity can wake up your gut after surgery and get you back into a healthy routine.
