IT industry’s flagship charity regatta celebrates 25 years and £1.3 million raised
The UK’s largest charity and IT networking sailing event, the Russell-Cooke Silicon Cup Regatta, is preparing to set sail again this September, celebrating its 25th anniversary of raising money in support of life-changing causes.
Since its inception, the event has raised over £1.3 million and attracted around 7,500 competitors, uniting the IT industry for two days of sailing in the Solent – the strait between the Isle of Wight and mainland Britain.
The regatta has become a highlight in the calendar for many – offering a combination of competition, collaboration, and charitable support.
This year’s event, taking place from 16-17 September 2025, continues to support three inspirational causes: The Genie’s Wish, The Andrew Simpson Foundation, and Greig City Academy.
Speaking about the 25th year of the event, Shaun Frohlich, chairman of the Russell-Cooke Silicon Cup Regatta, said: “Back in 1999, a small group of us wondered if we could hijack the interminable round of corporate jollies and repurpose one for a higher cause.
“We held our first event under the banner of the ‘IT Regatta’ and had 19 entries.
“We could not have forecast that by the time we were running the 25th event, it would have generated more than £1.3 million and brought thousands of IT professionals together.
“We would love for this event to see us break through the £1.5 million barrier, and with a following wind, that is possible.
“We already have more entries than we had in 2024, and we could easily and happily sell out.”
Returning sponsor Russell-Cooke Solicitors is backing the regatta for the third year.
Peter Jeffery, partner at the firm, said: “As the Silicon Cup celebrates its 25th anniversary, we’re proud to be returning as principal sponsor once again.
“It’s a significant milestone for an event that brings together businesses from across the tech sector to support causes that genuinely make a difference.
“For us at Russell-Cooke, the regatta is more than just a corporate event; it’s a unique opportunity to collaborate, connect and give back.
“Our team is looking forward to being back on the water and championing these brilliant charities.”
Participants will take to the water aboard guest yachts equipped with professional crews and full safety gear, with a safety briefing kicking off the event.
A lively gala dinner in Cowes on the Isle of Wight will round off the first day, featuring fundraising activities and charity auctions.
However, the regatta’s impact is felt far beyond the water.
Jon Holt, head of sixth form and director of the Scaramouche Sailing Club Trust at Greig City Academy, said: “It is a joy and privilege to have the Silicon Cup on board with our project that creates life changing opportunities for inner-city London state school students at Greig City Academy.
“Together with the support of all those involved in the annual regatta, we are helping our young sailors reach their full potential on and off the water.
“This extraordinarily positive partnership has provided collaborative sailing experiences for our young people and furthermore, through personal connections made during the regatta, a number of our students have gone on to secure jobs in the IT and marine industry.
“This shows the power that sailing can have as a sport for good – turning disadvantages into positive life chances.
“We are delighted to be involved in the 25th anniversary regatta this year – with much to celebrate.”
Katie Jones, co-founder of The Genie’s Wish, added: “The Silicon Cup means a great deal to The Genie’s Wish.
“The funding it provides helps us secure truly life-changing wishes for our beneficiaries, from vital specialist equipment to unforgettable family holidays.
“It also offers a fantastic opportunity to connect with other charities, working together to help change lives and building new relationships with a network of individuals, giving us new opportunities for future partnerships.
“As the event celebrates its 25th anniversary, we feel incredibly privileged to be one of the chosen charities and are proud of the sponsors and committee whose dedication has made such a difference over the years.”
Caroline Slocock, Head of Philanthropy at The Andrew Simpson Foundation, stated: “For over a decade, this event has helped us change lives through sailing, providing vital funding that’s enabled thousands of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to access the water, often for the very first time.
“We’ve seen children grow in confidence, learn new skills, discover new passions, and build future career prospects, all because of the opportunities made possible by the regatta. It’s more than just a race, it’s a powerful force for good.
“As we help to celebrate the regatta’s 25th anniversary, we’re proud to stand alongside this incredible community of sailors, sponsors and supporters, and are incredibly grateful for the difference they’ve helped us make for young people all around the UK.
